Planning: science and logistics

Sound and thorough planning would be critical to the success of the voyage and expedition. Mawson's previous experience with Shackleton had taught him that nothing could be left to chance. Much time was spent in seeking the advice of seasoned polar explorers, then traversing Europe, the UK and Australia to obtain the necessary scientific and operational equipment to survive, and succeed, across the winter in Antarctica.
